Seabirds under environmental pressures: Food supplementation has a larger impact than selenium on chicks exposed to mercury and a viral disease

چکیده
Although infectious disease outbreaks represent a serious threat for wildlife population viability, the environmental factors that underlie such are poorly investigated. The French Guiana breeding of Magnificent frigatebird Fregata magnificens is subjected to recurrent episodes chicks’ mortality likely caused by viral disease. We hypothesized high mercury (Hg) concentrations may be responsible emergence clinical signs. therefore investigated whether healthy and sick chicks show different Hg in blood. Because essential element selenium (Se) highly depleted during poisoning, we further experimentally tested an increased intake dietary Se has effect on blood levels Hg, increases circulating Se, improves oxidative status chicks. Finally, compared results this experiment with previous food supplementation experiment. Our similar between visible signs were significantly while simultaneously decreased naturally recovered from Both fish experiments blood, only modestly affected. Providing appeared have greater benefits than supplementing pills as, although had impact pills, it also reduced vulnerability disease, possibly reducing nutritional stress providing nutrients.

Target-distractor similarity has a larger impact on visual search in school-age children than spacing.
In typically developing children, crowding decreases with increasing age. The influence of target-distractor similarity with respect to orientation and element spacing on visual search performance was investigated in 29 school-age children with normal vision (4- to 6-year-olds [N = 16], 7- to 8-year-olds [N = 13]). Children were instructed to search for a target E among distractor Es (feature s...
متن کاملMercury and selenium in workers previously exposed to mercury vapour at a chloralkali plant.
The concentrations of total mercury (B-Hg), inorganic mercury (B-IHg), and methyl mercury (B-MeHg) in whole blood, urinary mercury (U-Hg), and selenium in urine (U-Se) and whole blood (B-Se) were determined in 74 chloralkali workers previously exposed to Hg vapour, and compared with 51 age matched referents. Dental amalgam state, fish consumption, and exposure related indices were studied with ...
متن کاملImpact of Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) Disease as a New Threat to Global Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, a Review
Viral Nervous Necrosis (VNN) causes viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER), a hazardous and devastating disease of many species of cultured and marine fish worldwide. It caused by betanodaviruses a serious concern especially in the fry and young fish. This virus infects most of the cultured fishes causing severe mortality. Our current review focuses chiefly on recent studies performed on VN...
متن کاملiranian english learners’ perception and personality: a dual approach to investigating influential factors on willingness to communicate
abstract previous studies on willingness to communicate (wtc) have shown the influence of many individual or situational factors on students’ tendency to engage in classroom communication, in which wtc has been viewed either at the trait-level or situational level. however, due to the complexity of the notion of willingness to communicate, the present study suggests that these two strands are ...
Environmental and Anthropogenic Pressures on Geophytes of Iran and the Possible Protection Strategies: A Review
Ornamental geophytes (ornamental flower bulbs) are international and national heritage considering their contribution to people's life quality around the world. Iranian habitats support about 8000 species of flowering plants (belonging to 167 families and 100 genera) of which almost 1700 are endemic. Iran is a rich country in terms of distribution of bulbous plants. More than 200 species of bul...
